Laminate veneers
Full pageWhat are laminate veneers?
A laminate veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the tooth’s shape, width, length, surface texture and colour without rebuilding the whole tooth the way a crown does. Because only the visible surface is covered, considerably less tooth structure is removed than for a crown.
Who is suitable for laminate veneers?
Veneers are generally considered for teeth that are structurally sound but uneven in shape or proportion, slightly spaced, worn at the edges, or discoloured in a way that has not responded to whitening. They are not appropriate where there is active gum disease or untreated decay, where too little enamel remains for a reliable bond, or where the underlying problem is tooth position and orthodontic treatment would be the more conservative option. Treatment suitability can only be determined following an individual clinical assessment.
Do laminate veneers require tooth preparation?
In most cases a small amount of enamel is removed so the porcelain has room to sit without making the tooth look bulky and so the margin meets the gum cleanly. The amount depends on the planned shape and the starting position of the tooth: where teeth are already narrow or worn, very little may be needed, while darker teeth requiring more opaque porcelain need more space. Enamel removal is not reversible, so the planned shape is usually tested with a temporary mock-up before any preparation begins.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Published follow-up studies of bonded porcelain veneers report survival rates that remain high over ten years, but results vary between studies and depend heavily on case selection, the quality of the adhesive bond, gum health and habits such as grinding. Veneers are a restoration rather than a permanent state: they may need replacing, and the tooth underneath will require some form of restoration from that point onward. No dentist can guarantee a specific lifespan.
How many appointments are normally required?
A typical course involves a consultation and records appointment, a preparation appointment at which temporary veneers are placed, and a fitting appointment once the laboratory work is complete. For patients travelling to Istanbul this is usually arranged as two visits within a single stay, with several days in between for the laboratory stage. The exact sequence depends on the case.
Zirconia restorations
Full pageWhat is a zirconia crown?
A zirconia crown is a full-coverage restoration milled from zirconium dioxide, a ceramic considerably stronger than the glass ceramics used for veneers. It covers the entire tooth rather than one surface, and contains no metal. It is used where a tooth has lost significant structure — through decay, fracture, large fillings or root canal treatment — or where a bridge or implant crown is needed.
Do zirconia crowns look natural?
Early monolithic zirconia was strong but opaque, which is where the material’s reputation for looking flat comes from. Multilayer and high-translucency zirconia transmit light far better. The result still depends on shade selection against the neighbouring teeth, correct orientation of the shade gradient, and surface texture and glaze being properly finished. Matching a single crown to natural teeth is harder than treating several teeth together.
How long do zirconia restorations last?
Zirconia is highly resistant to fracture and does not stain. What usually determines how long a crown lasts is not the ceramic but the health of the tooth and gum underneath: decay can still develop at the margin where the crown meets the tooth, so cleaning between the teeth and at the gum line is the most important factor. A night guard is generally advised for patients who grind.
Smile design
Full pageWhat is smile design?
Smile design is the planning stage that happens before any treatment. Tooth proportion, length, edge position and alignment are assessed against the face rather than in isolation, and the proposed result is designed on photographs and a digital scan. It determines what treatment is appropriate — which may be veneers, crowns, orthodontics, whitening, or no restorative treatment at all.
Can I see the result before treatment starts?
The planned design can be transferred into the mouth as a temporary mock-up placed over the unprepared teeth, so it can be seen, photographed and spoken with before anything irreversible is done. Length, edge shape and proportion can be adjusted at that point, or the plan reconsidered entirely, with no tooth structure removed. A mock-up shows shape and proportion reliably; final surface texture and translucency are established in the laboratory work that follows.
Travelling to Istanbul
Full pageCan I have an online consultation before travelling?
Yes. An initial online consultation reviews photographs and what you would like changed, and gives an indication of whether the treatment you are considering is likely to be appropriate. It is a preliminary discussion rather than a diagnosis: a definitive treatment plan requires a clinical examination, and in some cases radiographs, which can only be done in person.
How many days should I stay in Istanbul?
Treatment is normally arranged as two appointments within a single stay, with several days in between for the laboratory work. The length of stay depends on how many teeth are involved and whether any preparatory treatment is needed first, so it is confirmed after assessment rather than quoted in advance. Booking return travel only after the plan is confirmed avoids having to rush the laboratory stage.
What languages are consultations held in?
Consultations are held in Turkish or English.
General
What is the difference between zirconia crowns and laminate veneers?
A laminate veneer covers only the front surface of a tooth and removes a small amount of enamel; a zirconia crown covers the entire tooth and requires reduction on every surface. The choice is usually determined by the condition of the tooth rather than the appearance being sought: a sound tooth that needs reshaping is generally a veneer case, while a heavily filled, root-treated or fractured tooth is generally not. In a full smile design both are often used in the same case.
Is the treatment painful?
Tooth preparation is carried out under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity to hot and cold in the days following preparation is common, particularly while temporary restorations are in place, and usually settles. Anything beyond mild, improving discomfort should be reported rather than waited out.
Considering treatment?
Start with a conversation.
An initial consultation establishes whether the treatment you have in mind is appropriate for your teeth. If it is not, you will be told so.
